1. Wahl 9818 Lithium Ion Plus Stainless Steel Beard Trimmer
The Wahl model 9818 is exceptional. As the best men’s beard trimmer, it boasts powerful lithium-ion technology that provides twice the torque of comparable models. The trimmer feels comfortable to hold, although it may be slippery if your hands are wet or oily. It is well-balanced and cuts evenly without pulling. Overall, it is an excellent choice for both taming thick, unruly beards and achieving precise grooming.
The icing on the cake is the 9818 precision trimmer blade for shaping beards and mustaches. The Wahl is one of the few models reviewed by the Groom+Style for art of shaving that controls the look of your beard better than other men’s groomers.
And three removable stainless steel blades (stainless steel lasts longer than carbon steel and is perfect for thick beards) come with this shaver: a standard precision blade for most tasks, a contour shaver, and an ear/nose/eyebrow shaver.
The Wahl 9818 is everything you’d want in a beard trimmer (beard trimming, stubble or detailing, to head hair or body grooming): solid, powerful, versatile and reasonably priced for a product with a 5-year warranty. Facts and figures for the Wahl 9818 Lithium Ion Plus Stainless Steel Beard Trimmer:

2. Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210
The Philips Norelco BT5210 is another great beard/hair clipper, especially for those who like limited attachments and the convenience of a zoom wheel.
Like the Wahl, this cordless model has a powerful motor, sealed self-sharpening steel blades, and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. And with a built-in scaling wheel that adjusts the trim length instead of a set of guide combs, it can handle longer and shorter sizes than the Wahl (1/64 inch to ½ inch).
Two hair combs and a body comb are included for those who want their clipper to be used as a clipper or body hair clipper. Another good thing about the Philips Norelco is that it is waterproof, which makes cleaning much more manageable (it is waterproof to avoid mess, but the straightener cannot be used in the bath or shower).
The BT5210 isn’t quite as impressive compared to the Wahls motor power and rechargeable battery life, but it’s convenient and slightly less expensive and does a great job trimming beards and body hair. More details on the Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210:

Another product from Philips Norelco worth mentioning is the Philips Norelco QT4070 Vacuum Beard. The specifications are explained in detail just below.
2a. Philips Norelco BT7215/49 Vacuum Beard (replaces older model QT4070)
Here’s another maintenance-free option from Philips Norelco with a zoom wheel with 20 built-in length settings from 0.5mm to 10mm.
But thanks to the built-in vacuum, it makes an impressive beard trimmer. The only beard and mustache trimmer here is a savior for those concerned about hair loss.
The vacuum does a great job of picking up the scraps – 90% of the scraps go into the built-in storage bin to be emptied and cleaned later. With this clipper, you don’t have to fear the time-consuming task of cleaning hair from the sink or the floor.
Good performance, well-built – and a cool vacuum feature – all make the 7100 an interesting choice. More than a novelty feature and certainly a trimmer worth considering.

3. Remington MB4040/MB4045B Mustache Beard and Stubble Trimmer
If you want an all-purpose razor at a great price, we recommend checking out the Remington MB4045B. If you need a long-flowing beard trimmer and don’t want to pay a high price for a tail, this is your #1 choice. It is an attractive-looking device that fits comfortably in hand and takes care of any man’s beard without any problems.
The MB4045B has a blade with 18 length settings and three combs – a blunt comb (which can be shortened from 1mm to 5mm in 0.5mm increments), a medium comb (1.5mm to 18mm), and an XL shoulder ( 20 mm to 35 mm). It is suggested mm) suitable for working with a long beard. Like the Wahl, this beard trimmer delivers a close shave.
The older model MB4040 has fewer length settings.
It’s become almost unfathomable not to have a Remington product in the men’s grooming range – not just trimmers for men. Diving into the product, the Remington MB4045B Mustache, and Beard Trimmer deserves plenty of praise for its simplistic design – it’s sleek, easy to hold and makes little if any compromises in regards to either form or function. The titanium blades are self-sharpening.
It also features a long-lasting battery that gives you two hours of cutting time to achieve the perfect look. Another bonus on the functionality front is the zoom wheel that gives you impressive control over mustache and beard hair length. With the cutting attachment fitted flush with the design, this beard trimmer also offers an impressive measure of durability.
Note – if you are a man who loves beards then check out our list of the best beard grooming kits.
Remington is known for producing quality personal grooming products at friendly prices, and this beard trimmer fits squarely into that mold. It’s a good choice in the lower-cost category, especially for those men with long beards. Checking the specs of the Remington MB4045B Mustache Beard and Stubble Trimmer:

4. Philips Norelco OneBlade Hybrid Electric Trimmer And Shaver
As the name suggests, this is a great beard trimmer or hair edger. The double-sided “OneBlade” design uses the same device for trimming, edging, and trimming. However, this claim is somewhat misleading as this Philips Norelco model is not intended to replace regular shaving.
It takes some time when cutting and gives the user a “five-hour shadow” (which cuts the scalp inefficiently), so it’s a very comfortable shave because it doesn’t scratch the skin.
The razor looks and feels more like a wet/dry razor than a straight razor, with a slimmer body and razor-shaped blade.
The blades of the OneBlade do have to be replaced every four months – if you trim or shave twice a week – see link below.
If you need the product but have a long beard, the OnePladePro has a shaving wheel that can handle hair from 0.4mm to 10mm. Edges and details are light, as the slim design makes the clipper comfortable.
The Philips Norelco battery is nickel-metal hydride, not lithium-ion, so it’s not as powerful as other clippers on our list and thinner. However, the low price can be considered sufficient compensation for these disadvantages.
Note: there are about 12 different model numbers for the OneBlade. The main number differences are explained below, and within those ranges you have options like extra blades and a travel pouch.
Philips OneBlade QP252(X) – face shaving and trimming with 3 or 4 click on combs to adjust the length.
Philips OneBlade QP26(XX) – face and body shaving and trimming with 3 or 4 click on combs to adjust the length.
Philips OneBlade QP65(XX) – face shaving/trimming with a single adjustable comb for the length.
The Philips OneBlade is a good unit for very specific purposes. If you have sensitive skin and can’t tolerate a close shave, or if you’re primarily focused on stubble and edging, it’s a great option. Specs for the Philips Norelco QP2630 OneBlade Hybrid Electric Trimmer And Shaver:

5. Philips Style Shaver QS6141/33 Dual Ended Shaver and Beard Trimmer
Note: Unfortunately, it looks like this products is not available on Amazon at the moment. We instead recommend that you check out one of the other excellent options listed here.
Like you can’t shave your beard entirely with a razor, trimming your beard with a razor won’t give you the best results. Otherwise, one attractive home has a Philips children’s device with a metal shaver and an adjustable beard trimmer. All you have to do is turn the device upside down, and you can perform all your facial treatments without disturbing the equipment.
First, there’s a dual-foil head with nano-sharp blades that delivers an extremely close shave, along with a mid-trimmer that’s designed to remove hairs longer than the ones the floating heads would normally be able to grab. It works as expected from a Philips Style shaver and gets the job done 20% faster than previous models.
Typically with combination electric shaver and trimmers, the shaver is not that effective, however, the foil shaver on the Philips Style Shaver is extremely high quality.
Just flip this model and – presto! On the other end, you’ll find a high-quality beard and stubble trimmer. The full metal trimmer has a detachable comb with twelve adjustable length settings from 10mm down to 0.5mm.
When you take the comb off, the dual-sided trimmer gives you the choice of a 32mm blade for high-performance trims or a 15mm blade for close detail work or trims in areas that call for a finer touch.
The combination allows you to choose any length, any style or any type of trim for your beard.
The QS6141 is waterproof for complete wet or dry shaving, it gives you 50 minutes of shave time per charge (a foldable charging stand is included), and it does a terrific job shaving your face, trimming your beard – or both. 6. Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer
Have you ever wished you could pretend you were a barber when giving yourself a trim at home? You can with the Andis 4775, the professional trimmer that many barbers actually use. It’s not as expensive as you might think – and just like your hair stylist’s model, it can’t operate in cordless mode or as a wet shaver.
However, its T-blade with curved edges and its hard carbon-steel blades provide the ultimate in precise trimming without leaving bumps, irritation or ingrown hairs. And it’s built like a brick.
There are no adjustment settings on this trimmer. Just as with your barber’s trimmer, you need to switch out the combs to deal with different lengths of hair; four are included (Sizes 0, 1, 2 and 3), which doesn’t give you an enormous choice but if it’s good enough for your barber, it’s probably good enough for you.
The Andis operates on a magnetic motor instead of the rotary motor commonly found in beard trimmers, making it a little less powerful but much more durable.
As you’d imagine from having one of these babies used on your neck, sideburns, and eyebrows for years, it takes a little while to get the hang of maneuvering the Andis GTX carefully, because it’s not a tapered unit like many of the other options in our rankings. It can also be a slight nuisance when your trimmer is attached to a wall plug by a cord, although the cord is eight-feet long so it’s not a major issue.
Once you’re used to the trimmer, though, you’ll find that you can work very precisely and perform fading and outlining as well as straight trimming with the GTX. The motor runs fairly quietly although the blades will get quite hot with prolonged use (not really an issue for home use), and do require regular oiling. But all you’ll need is a white coat and a push broom in order to feel just like a pro when trimming your beard or mustache.
The Andis is a professional quality trimmer, with only 4 comb lengths provided. If you need easy trimming (without training as a barber) of multiple hair lengths of hair, this one is not for you. However, if you want an ultra-reliable trimmer and only need a few set lengths, this is a quality choice. More on the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer:

7. Philips Norelco MG3750 Multigroom Series 3000
There was no way the review team could leave out this Philips Norelco beard trimmer, which is a terrific budget choice.
Its motor isn’t quite as powerful as those on our top-rated trimmers, and it isn’t durable enough to last as long as those other options.
But it’s versatile with three beard trimming guards (3 to 7mm), three hair trimming guards (9 to 16mm), a detailer, a stubble guard and a nose/ear trimmer, and its self-sharpening tempered steel blades do a better-than-respectable job keeping your beard or hair neat and trim.
This is a lightweight, easy to clean unit which is easy to handle for home trimming jobs and would also be perfect to take on the road.
The Multigroom Series 3000 is an inexpensive trimmer that is versatile and well worth its price, as long as you don’t have a long, thick beard. Specifications for the Philips Norelco MG3750 Multigroom Series 3000:

8. Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600
Still a very high-quality trimmer, just not as durable as our new number 1 choice, the Wahl 9818.
Some guys have facial hair that seems to grow by inches overnight. If you’re one of the men who need the ultimate power to trim what you’d like to be the ultimate beard, Wahl has the product for the job.
The 9854-600 is the most powerful of all the trimmers on our list, with a motor that provides twice the average torque for a beard trimmer. And if you don’t need the power for heavy, thick growth, it will also let you zip through a trim in a breeze because you won’t have to go over and over each area.
This unit will also run longer than almost any other trimmer on a single charge, a full three hours for a 60-minute charge, thanks to Wahl’s new lithium-ion 2.0 battery technology, plus a one-minute quick charge feature.
Why isn’t it at the top of our rankings, then? Two reasons: it’s nowhere near as convenient to use as the Norelco, and the detail trimming it provides frankly isn’t as good.
There are only six-length settings on the Wahl, and there are a huge number of blades and combs to juggle depending on what you want to do with the trimmer: three combs (stubble, medium and full), a trimmer blade, a detail blade (which you may not be satisfied with when trimming ear or nose hair), a precision T-blade and a dual shaver blade.
That may be a terrific assortment if you’re either an absolute perfectionist or a hair styling professional who’s adept at juggling attachments; to us, it was way too much to worry about when all we wanted to was to get a great trim. The Wahl All-In-One is quite noisy, and can’t be washed under a faucet, however, it’s a solid, well-built trimmer and crafted to be comfortable as well as effective.
It’s a very good choice for men with forests on their face – and it’s half the price of the Norelco, too. Taking a closer look at the Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600:

9. Panasonic ER-GB370K Men’s Electric Moustache and Beard Trimmer
Once again still a great trimmer, but the battery recharge time and runtime lets it down. The Philips BT5210 just seems to have a slight edge.
Please note: Panasonic recently replaced the ER-GB40-S with the slightly updated model ER-GB370K which is described below.
We mentioned perfectionists a moment ago, and that’s the target market for the Panasonic ER-GB370K. It has the most individual hair length settings of any of our top 13 best beard fade, with 19 choices from 1 mm to 10 mm; there’s no need to juggle a multitude of attachments in order to get the trim you’re looking for.
The blades are very close together to provide as much of a quality trim as possible, and Panasonic angles the stainless steel, hypoallergenic blades at 45 degrees, which they claim is the optimal angle to cut stubborn, longer hair from your face.
You may find, though, that this trimmer is at its very best when trimming hair down to stubble, and not quite as effective at quickly whisking the longer whiskers completely away.
This is a quality unit, but it definitely has a couple of major drawbacks. It uses an old-fashioned nickel-metal-hydride battery instead of a lithium-ion one which means it can take more than half-a-day to fully charge, and then it will only last for 40 minutes before needing to be returned to the charging unit which comes with the ER-GB370K.
There’s also a major plus though; it has a terrific water drainage system which not only lets you wash it under the faucet but prevents water buildup if you want to use the unit with shaving foam in the shower. The rubber grip is also handy for shower use, too.
This Panasonic model is far from perfect but it does a great job for every day, meticulous beard trim ing kit, especially if you’re one of those guys who would love to get through the morning routine of showering and trimming as fast as possible. 10. Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41)
Note, our previous top choice – this cool trimmer does not seem to be easy to find any more.
We’re well into the 21st century, and there are still no signs of flying cars or even hoverboards that really hover. However, we do have a laser beard trimmer – sort of. The Philips Norelco 9100 doesn’t actually use lasers to burn off hair and give you a neat beard or mustache, but it does use a pop-up laser guide to mark the exact lines where you should trim.
The end result is a perfectly symmetrical beard that your wife or girlfriend can’t possibly criticize. There’s no safety concern either since the trimmer uses a “Class 1” laser which won’t hurt your eyes if it happens to shine into them.
More to the 9100 Than the Laser
There’s a lot more to the 9100 than just a laser. There are 17 settings to choose from for the length of hair to trim, ranging from 0.4 mm to 7 mm (that is 1/64th of an inch to 9/32nd of an inch with an LED display showing the setting you’ve chosen), and you can lock in your preferred setting so there won’t be any variation while trimming.
It also boasts 0.2mm precision settings – if you try to move your thumb and forefinger to measure the difference, you can’t. That’s how precise this Norelco trimmer gets.
The performance of the Beard Trimmer 9100 is outstanding, largely due to the finely-trimmed chromium steel self-sharpening blades which never need maintenance, the tips are nicely-rounded so they don’t irritate your skin despite the closeness of the trimming. There are two sides to the trimmer, a narrow one to use around your mouth and nose and a wide one for easy and fast trimming around the sideburns and the neck.
This is also one of the easiest units to clean that is on the market, only requiring a quick rinse under the faucet to get rid of all the loose hair inside.
With 17 different length settings, it’s easy to achieve a wide range of looks and the sheer precision of these settings even allows for getting the exact stubble you want. The double-sided blade only adds to the precision side of the equation, making it exceptionally easy to create clean, straight lines for sideburns and the narrow design lends itself to styling versatility.
This beard trimmer will run cordless for an hour on each charge of its lithium-ion battery and comes with two combs (a detail comb and a beard comb). For decades, Norelco has been manufacturing many of the finest personal grooming products anywhere, and the 9100 is one of the best they’ve ever produced.
It’s an expensive beard trimmer, as far as beard trimmers go, but if you’re going to have a beard or mustache for the long term you’ll want a look to be proud of. The Beard Trimmer 9100 will provide excellent results with the added benefit of you not having to continually switch between combs and blades. 11. Philips Series 9000 Prestige
You don’t have to spend nearly $ 100 on a beard trimmer, but if you’re looking for a premium experience, look no further than this excellent model from Philip Beard. It’s the new and improved version of Philip’s popular trimmers. Don’t let this beard trimming tool fool you. It’s a tool that could double as a truffle bag and has a large, comfortable handle.
The Philips BT9000 Prestige promises a lot with its high titer, but it delivers the goods. With a sturdy steel body, sturdy dial, and innovative steel comb, it’s as chic and luxurious as the name suggests and is a great trimmer for hairier faces.
The product can be adjusted from an ultra-short length of 0.4mm to 5mm with a simple twist of the dial, while an additional plastic shield takes the length from 5.4mm to 10mm mm to tame the mess. While not great for very long beards, 10mm can be considered too short for full hipster facial hair.

Most Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a beard trimmer?
If you decide to grow a long beard, you still need to know how to trim it as it grows. And for all of these situations – basically anything but a close shave – you need a good beard trimmer.
Is Wahl better than Philips?
While the Philips wins in its ability to function while charging, the Wahl can still do what you need after a 60-second charge, and the warranty is 2.5x that, all for a few dollars less. I highly recommend them both – neither is a bad option – but Wahl narrowly wins.
Conclusion
These are the best beard trimmers that the Groom+Style team has identified for the year. By the way, if you are committed to keeping your beard, you should consider buying some beard and mustache wax to tame it.
Thank you so much for providing List best trimmer’s for men. It is very useful information.
What is your opinion on the Brio Beardscape trimmer?
Thank you for such a wonderfull review the way i want to read you made it possible.
I need a suggestion from you iam looking for complete body trimmer. confused between phillips and wahl. please suggest. i choosed phillips mg 7715 but after reading your review got confuse ehich one to buy.
please suggest between phillips and wahl models so i can go and buy.
Thank you so much for providing such an awesome piece of information. Really thankful to you!
I am having my beard lazored for shape, therefore I will on need to simply trim what is left without the need to do any shaping. I usually trim it all over at the same length (3.5mm) – I currently use the Phillips style dual ended body groomer but find it leaves longer patches in some of the harder to get to places where my neck meets under my face.
Do you have any good suggestions for that I should get? I am not worried on price, corded etc… I simply want a nice even finish across all of my beard for neatness and uniformity.
Thanks
Alex
Hi Alex,
Totally understand, yes the Philips dual ended body groomer (trimmer end) might not be the best choice for “longer” hairs.
We really like the Remington MB4045B The Beardsman for beard/stubble maintenance.
Also, don’t forget that even though you are maintaining stubble, a beard grooming kit might help i.e. beard oil, conditioner and a brush can keep your stubble looking great.

Good luck!

Hi, is there a trimmer you recommend that doesn’t need any comb attachments for cuts of say .5 to 10mms? They tend to get misplaced and I just want a simple dial on a shaver without any attachments needed. Thanks for any help
Hi Gary,
Thanks for the question.
There are a few options, the one that most closely meets your requirements is the Panasonic ER-SB40-K link to Amazon -> https://geni.us/panasonicERSB40k.
It has a lithium-Ion battery and trims from 0.5mm to 10mm (with one comb).
The options from our list are the:
– Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210, which trims from 0.4 – 7mm with one guard.
– Philips Style Shaver QS6141/33 Dual Ended Shaver, which trims from 0.5mm to 10mm.
Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Where do I trim my neckline? 2 fingers above the Adam’s apple?

Yep, 1.5inches or about 2 fingers above the Adam’s apple is the “beard-lovers-accepted-best-practice”…play around with this and see what works for you…

Thanks.
I’ve noticed that Babyliss and Conair trimmers are very similar. Are they the same company?
Hi Alex,
You picked it. Babyliss is a subsidiary of Conair.

What brand makes the best beard trimmers: Wahl, Andis, Philips, Panasonic, Brio(who makes the Brio Beardscape trimmer), Remington?
Hey again Alex,
Yeah, we have kept an eye on these trimmers, but they are twice/three times the price of other trimmers we have tested (and love) – so we have not been convinced enough to add them to our review.
Would you be willing to pay 2/3 times the price for those updated Panasonic trimmers rather than the models below?

Hello. Have you checked this new model from Panasonic https://shop.panasonic.com/personal-care/mens-shavers-and-grooming/mens-beard-hair-trimmers/ER-GB96-K.html#srule=featured&start=1&cgid=mens-beard-hair-trimmers?
Hey Alex,
Looking at the Remington WETech pg6255, not sure the people answering the questions are clueless, guess they are trying to be helpful, but they are probably answering off a script.
The trimmer head is stainless steel and self-sharpening, so its unlikely it will need replacing “that often” if it is cared for/cleaned and oiled every so often – once again at a guestimate you could probably get away with not replacing it for at least a couple of years, most likely more. What you will find is that it will just stop cutting as effectively as it gets older/blunter – and you will know it definitely needs replacing when you feel it pulling hairs rather than trimming them. This will definitely vary from person to person based on their hair type/usage etc, but probably more importantly the persons actual awareness of the pulling/snagging, and how many passes they used to take to trim a certain area as it gets duller. Some people just keep using them even when it keeps taking multiple passes and a bit of snagging, because they cannot be bothered etc, and in the scheme of things they are still getting a decent trim.
You will find it is the body shaver attachment that needs replacing more regularly on the pg6255 model.
That looks like a pretty cool beard styler from Panasonic, just be aware it is more of a beard styler than body trimmer (but you could certainly trim body hair with it if that is your goal).
I think there are better beard trimmers out there such as the ones listed on our page below.
https://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/5-best-beard-trimmers-for-men/
Cheers again,
Pierce
I’m looking for a trimmer to shave as close as possible leaving a five o clock shadow.
Hi Trent,
Thanks for the question. Effectively all trimmers, and especially all the trimmers listed on the page above, can be utilized without their beard guard and will trim to about 0.5mm. Please see our bullet point in the blue box’s “Cuts without guard”.
Having said that the number 4 on our list, the Philips Norelco QP2520/70 OneBlade, is specifically designed to leave a five o’clock shadow – and is a great product. It also trims slightly closer than the other trimmers, to about 0.4mm (but at those lengths, it is very hard to tell the difference). The downside of this product is that you will need to buy replacement blades every 4 months or so (with the other trimmers you still need to clean and oil every so often so that is something to consider as well).
If the OneBlade does not interest you then all the other trimmers on our list can create the five o’clock shadow, so this would mean you just have to find a trimmer that meets your other requirements such as price, battery or corded operation, brand etc and go from there.
Hope this helps, let us know if you have any other questions.

Pierce
Hi
amazing article.
Just want to understand better: I would need an electric razor mostly for keeping that 3-day beard look and once every two weeks to shave it as short as possible (so then I can use a cheap Gilette to have that fresh completely shaved look)
which product do you think will suit me better (no budget issues)
thanks
Best,
.
Hi Julian,
Thanks for the question. Any of the beard trimmers on our list would meet your requirements (if I understand correctly you will use a blade every 2 weeks to shave fully, so you are not after a combined electric beard trimmer and shaver option).
I would suggest focusing on the Wahl 9818 Stainless Steel Beard, Stubble & Detailing Trimmer or Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100. Both are great products which will serve you well for many years.
Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi there
Is there much of a difference between the Wahl 9818 stainless steel model and the Wahl 9884-312 zero overlap trim & shave model?
Regards
John
Hey John,
Thanks for your question. It seems like the Wahl 9884-312 zero overlap trim & shave model is specific to Australia/Asia. We have not tested that specific model, but it has a few differences to the Wahl 9818 stainless steel.
The Wahl 9818 has a variety of blades (Stainless steel T-Blade, detail shaver, detail trimmer, ear/nose/eyebrows) while the Wahl 9884-312 comes with the single T-Blade (zero overlap) and then a dual foil shaver.
Keeping in mind we haven’t touched that specific model and can only look at the pictures, but drawing on our experience, we would say it looks like a pretty great product.
The only reservation we would have is that the dual foil shaver, does not seem to have a long hair trimmer in between the foils? So if you really want to shave close you might find that some of the longer hairs could be missed (if you have a look at the photo of the foil shaver on the Philips Style Shaver QS6141/33 Dual for example you will see the long hair trimmer between the foils). If you trim with the trimmer first and then use the dual foil shaver this would probably not be too much of a problem, but if you were just expecting to shave without using the trimming, performance might be a bit average.
In terms of quality and trimming short without the guards (zero overlap baldes) etc it should be amazing. Just think about how you were expecting to use the shaver.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Great reviews and great info. Sometimes too much info and too many choices lol. I need a great body trimmer that can handle long unruly chest hair and handle trimming arm hair. Hope the team can help. Thanks.
Hi John,
Please check out our best body groomer page, linked below. The Philips Norelco Bodygroom Series 7100 would be a great choice if you want to be able to shave body hair as well as trim.
http://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/5-best-body-groomers-for-men/
Otherwise, if you really just wanted a quality & convenient trimmer then the Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210 (described on this page) would be brilliant.
Let us know if you have any follow up questions.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
I’m looking for a ‘jack of all trades’ beard trimmer and shaver.
This is will probably be my fourth or fifth trimmer over the years, so I know what I’m looking for, I just need some help finding it. My beard starts at .5m by the ears up to around 2cm on the chin, so it needs to be good at fading. What I have found hard to find though, is a trimmer that is also very good at shaving for the neckline and cheeks.
Ideally, it would also have a two pin plug, so that it it does not have to leave the bathroom for charging overnight.
I have not seen any websites with filters for all of these things, which makes it very hard to find one that ticks all the boxes, so any help would be much appreciated.
Hey Zak,
Thanks for this brilliant question, and working with us to find a brilliant product that can both trim effectively, and shave exceptionally fast and smooth.
This exceptional “Jack of all Trades” is the Philips Style Shaver QS6141/33 Dual Ended Shaver and Beard Trimmer for Wet and Dry Use. There is also the Philips qs6161 model for those in the UK.
Usually with shaver and trimmer combination products the shave is not amazing, but with this product you have the dual foil shaver head (with long hair trimmer set between the foils), which means it shaves incredibly fast and smooth. It will not shave 2-3 days of growth, but you simply have to trim to 0.5mm with the trimmer head and then shave and you get great results.
We will be doing a full write up of the product and adding it to the page for those people who are interested in a product that can both trim and shave facial hair.
Until then if you want to know more follow this link to Amazon -> http://geni.us/philipsstyleshaver
Cheers for now,
Pierce and Lisa
Thanks for the article! Great information, particularly in the guide section regarding the types of blades. Also, thank you for the details section on each trimmer. I find it interesting that the Norelco QP2520/70 and Panasonic ER-GB370K still use Ni-MH batteries!
Hi Chris,
Yes, for the Norelco OneBlade it is not as much of an issue (the OneBlade is a focused product for stubble so does not require as much “power”), but for the Panasonic ER-GB370K it seems they were just trying to keep the cost down. Either way, the OneBlade and Panasonic that we bought for testing are still going strong after 12 months so I would not consider it a complete dealbreaker.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi i need a trimmer to create a good look stubble look , i also like nose and ear attachments but if it means the quality suffers then happy to leave out .
So what do you guys recommend?
Mark.
Hey Mark,
Thanks for contacting us. Pretty much any of the trimmers on this list would do the trick. Here are some suggestions:
Wahl 9818 – multiple blade attachments, including nose hair trimmer. Great for stubble, high quality, long warranty.
Philips Norelco QP2520/70 OneBlade – great quick stubble, easy on the skin.
Philips Norelco MG3750 Multigroom Series 3000 – great budget choice, nose and detailing attachments.
Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600 – older model of the Wahl 9818, cheaper not as durable.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi. Thanks for the reviews. I am looking for a face shaver that can work for me when I travel to Africa. I have been using the Andis T-trimmer. My problem is that it makes a Lot of noise when connected to the travel adaptor/step down transformer. Is there any model that works best with the transformer (less noise)and leaves a close shave?
Hi Nnamdi,
Please start by reading our guides below.
I am not sure if this is just for use while you travel or for daily use. If it is just for travel then you can focus more on the shavers in the first list, if it is for daily use then focus more on the shavers in the second list. Depending on budget etc, a good compromise which will be relatively easy to travel with, and will perform at a high level is the Braun Series 7. Good luck with your choice.
http://groomwithstyle.com/best-travel-shaver-review-top-5-list/ (travel focus shavers, very compact, but not as performant)
http://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/mens-top-5-best-electric-shaver-list/ (high performing shavers for daily use)

Hi.
Any recommendation for something which will both shave and trim? I will never keep a long beard, but would like the flexibility of having short stubbles now and then.
Thanks
Hey Tik,
Yes, that is an interesting “product space” between shaving and trimming. The best tools we have found for this are usually used for shaving the head (where people need to trim hair short first before shaving). You can read more about the products available on our page here -> http://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/top-5-best-electric-head-shavers-for-men/
The best options are:
Panasonic Arc3 Electric Razor ES-RT97-S -> Amazon Link -> http://geni.us/bestelectheadshav4
Philips Norelco QC5580/40 Do-It-Yourself Hair Clipper Pro -> Amazon Link -> http://geni.us/bestelectheadshav1
You will need to think about those how often you are going to shave and how often you are going to trim – because if you are going to shave 90% of the time and just trim every now and again, it might be better to invest in a really high-quality face shaver (options via the link below) and buy a budget (yet quality trimmer) like the Philips Norelco MG3750 Multigroom Series 3000 (Amazon link -> http://geni.us/philipsmultiMG3750).
http://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/mens-top-5-best-electric-shaver-list/
Good luck with the decision.

Do you have any info on the Andis Slimline Pro Li T-blade Trimmer? I have a short beard and just want something to keep that stubble short lookin beard. The barbers at my barber shop use this brand/trimmer (Andis) however, the reviews on Amazon are not the greatest.
Hi Eddie,
Sorry, but no one in our team has tried the Andis Slimline Pro Li T-blade Trimmer. The negative reviews on Amazon (Amazon link -> http://geni.us/andisslimlineprolit ) mainly refer to quality issues around the battery – about 13% of the 500 reviews are negative. It is very tricky to comment on the quality without trying the model, but with any electric product, there are going to be items that fail (especially with cordless products)… based on our experience this number of negative reviews is probably quite reasonable (within the expected range based on reading a few of the reviews). Typically, G+S have found that Andis makes some great trimmers.
One of the reasons we listed the Wahl as our number 1 choice is due to its 5-year warranty – and that fact that they will work hard to honor it if anything goes wrong. On that note, the Wahl 9818 does everything the Andis Slimline Pro will do (and more) and is around the same price (once again with that 5-year warranty)…so maybe it is worth considering?
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi own a French style beard and like it that way but the length of the hair should be not more than 0.2mm I have to visit my barber paying load of money just to fine tune it.
Is there any trimmer by which I can maintain my beard without paying a visit to barber ?
Plz do tell me…
Hi Suraj,
Thanks for the great question. What you want to look for are “balding clippers”.
The Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer can be zero-gaped to trim extremely close (0.2 mm) without the guard.
Alternatively, what you effectively want is a trimmer that can be fitted with blades that can be zero-gapped, or of the size specifications:
#000000 – 1/150″ – 0.1mm
#00000 – 1/125″ – 0.2mm
#000 – 1/50″ – 0.3mm
etc.
Please follow the link below and look for our answer to Kurt for different options from Wahl, Andis and Oster.

I was using a Moser beard trimmer, it was more of a stubble trimmer and I was happy with it. I lost it recently and was wondering which one to buy to keep my stubble to minimum length, just a shadow.
Please help as there are so many products available in the market and it gets so confusing.
Hi Asif,
If you do not have any special requirements other than achieving a nice short stubble (0.5mm ish), then please consider our #1 (Wahl 9818 Lithium Ion Plus Stainless Steel Beard Trimmer),#2 (Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210) or #3 (Philips Norelco QP2520/70 OneBlade Hybrid Electric Trimmer And Shaver) choices.
They should all serve you well.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
This was very helpful yet slot of information. I want the best trimmer that will keep my beard/stubble at the length of the mentioned Brad Cooper length. What unit do you recommend the highest?
Thanks, Johnny
Hey Johnny,
Bradley Cooper has changed his beard length consistently over the last few years – varying his look. For a variety of lengths check out our number 1 and number 2 choices the Wahl 9818 and Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Wooh! wondeful
Great points and information
I personally prefer Panasonic ER-GB40-S Beard Trimmer and the only thing I don’t like is its charging time.
Thanks for sharing these types of posts Really helpful.
Hi Pierce,
Thanks a lot for your response. Really Apprecite it !!
However, after watching some pics, I realize I made a mistake on my question. (english is not my first linguage)
I actually use a stubble / short beard and I sometimes I shave it on the lower part of my neck.
Is your answear still the same? Is there a big difference between the OneBlade and the Norelco 9100 at 0.4mm?
I was thinking about using the Norelco at around 3mm for beard and mustache and at 0.4mm for the lower part of my neck
Thanks a lot, keep up the good work
Hi Leandro,
Not a problem at all. Yes, in your case we still think the Philips 9100 would be a great choice.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
I maintain a medium sized beard but I usually cut it with a razor under the neck, however my skin is really sensitive and I get razor bumps.
Should I buy
Philips Norelco QP2520/70 OneBlade
or
Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41)
Does the 9100 cuts the hair short enough under the neck?
I prefer the 9100 model but I’m affraid it does not trim close enough
Hi Leandro,
Thanks for contacting us.
If you maintain a medium length beard on your face and want to trim really short around your neck G+S thinks the Philips Norelco 9100 would be a good option for you. The OneBlade would also help you achieve similar results, but the BT9285/41 probably has the edge when it comes to maintaining a medium length beard, keeping nice lines, and less switching out of beard guards etc.
The BT9285/41 (and the OneBlade) will cut to about 0.4mm, and will do so without minimal impact on your skin, and will help you avoid razor bumps. At 0.4mm you will effectively have very short stubble under the neck, but will most likely look quite natural as you have the beard on your face.
Good luck with your choice.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
It looks like there is a newer version of the Phillips 7200 BT7215/49. The newer version is BT7225/49. I didn’t see any reviews for the newer model. Do you know if this was done to fix the breakable tab issues?
Hey Mark,
Thanks for contacting us. We have not tested the Philips model BT7225/49 (only the Phillips 7200 BT7215/49), but comparing the specifications online it looks like they are exactly the same, just that the BT7225/49 comes with a travel pouch.
As mentioned in our answer to Jaren (above) the G+S test team has never had any issues with the tines on the guards. The 5-year warranty should provide you some comfort as well.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Thanks Pierce for your fast reply.
I think I will wait for Panasonic SB60/40 reviews. On Philips 9297 I like there is no oiling needed.
But Panasonic was lately getting better reviews. Lets see how is new Panasonic percieved before I take final decision.
Excellent review. Now I am stuck between Panasonic ER-GB80 or Philips Norelco 9285.
But what about new Panasonic ER-GD60 and ER-SC60?
Will be used for shorter beard. I don’t need laser, but maintenance free is plus. Less comb product is preferred. Washable is not that important. I see GB80 is getting better reviews. But new products are not tested much yet.
What would be your recommendation? Thanks.
Hey Milo,
We have not tried the Panasonic ER-SC60 yet, it looks like it was “just” released (August 2017) – but it seems to be marketed specifically as a Hair Clipper more than a beard trimmer, and it also seems to be quite highly priced (US$179.99)? If you were interested in their latest offerings you might want to check out the ER-SB40-K Beard, Mustache and Hair Trimmer (it is also quite highly priced- I guess due to it being a new model, which is waterproof and with the digital display) – the cutting blade, however, is better suited for a beard than the ER-SC60.
I would personally avoid the Panasonic ER-GD60 until there is more information available – we have not tried this model, but have found that designs that “cut to the side” are generally disappointing. G+S might take a further look at this product later in the year.
G+S really like both the Panasonic ER-GB80 and the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100/9285 – and for ease of maintenance, use, and performance etc. both would serve you very well. We just wish the ER-GB80 had a Lithium-Ion battery, rather than the nickel-metal-hydride battery, (but the ER-GB80 can be used corded/while plugged in so this is probably more of Groom+Style’s preference rather than a dealbreaker for most people) – and the BT9285 has become hard to find in the USA. If you won’t use the laser, then save yourself some money and go for the ER-GB80.
Cheers for now,
Pierce
Hi!
Can you help me?
Where i can find that Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210 or BT5215/41 in Europe?
It’s not on amazon :S
Anyway, nice article!
Hi Tiago,
It looks like the best match product in Europe is the Philips Norelco 5000 Beard and Stubble Trimmer BT5200/XX. This is effectively the same model but it only comes with 1 beard/stubble comb.
The following Amazon link should take you to the best match product in Europe now.
http://geni.us/philipstrimmerbt5210
Good luck!

Hi. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article.
About Philips 9100 (Model BT9285/41), I can see that you wrote “Note, our previous top choice – this cool trimmer does not seem to be easy to find any more.”
Is it because of the availability that it’s not longer the first choice, or is Wahl 9818 Lithium Ion Plus actually a better trimmer?
I already have the Philips 9100, but it just stopped working now after 3,5 years. I think it was very good, but this is the only one I have tried ever. The product is still available here in Norway, and I’m considering to buy the same one again, but I saw that the Wahl trimmer won your rating. It sounds like a good one, but is it high maintenance when it comes to cleaning since it’s not waterproof? Because I’m a bit lazy when it comes to that. My beard is also a bit thicker and richer than my buddies, is it good for thick beard?
Which one yould you recommend? The price doesn’t matter, as both are priced around £90 in Norway.
Hey Anders,
Thanks for the positive feedback, it makes the effort worthwhile… 🙂
G+S really do like the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100, and the availability issues were the main reason we removed it from the top position – many readers were complaining that it was too hard to find. Having said that the Wahl 9818 is incredibly powerful and high quality with that 5-year warranty. It would have no trouble with a thick (or even very thick beard) – but some people do not like the multiple attachments and the fact that is is not waterproof (it is tricky to get everything). Whether or not you think having to brush off the cutting head and the combs after use (and oiling it every now and again) is “high maintenance” compared to rinsing it under the tap, only you can decide.
If the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 is available still in Norway and it treated you well, you like the convenience of the adjustable comb, the laser, and the fact that it is washable – then it might be good to stick with what you know?
Good luck with the choice.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hello!
Could you please let me know what is difference(s) between (Philips 5100) BT5210/42 and (Philips 5100) BT5215/41??
Thanks a lot
Hey Adam,
Thanks for the great question. They are effectively the same base unit with the same performance specifications, they just come with different attachments. The (Philips 5100) BT5210/42 is marketed as a Beard and Head Hair Trimmer, while the (Philips 5100) BT5215/41 is sold as a Beard, Head Hair Plus Body Trimmer. So the only real difference between the BT5210/42 and BT5215/41 is that the BT5215/41 comes with a body comb attachment.
Hope that helps.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi!
Like Leslie, I am buying my boyfriend a trimmer for christmas and I can’t seem to choose between the wahl 9818 or the panasonic ER-GB 80 or 70.
Which one is best? / what is the difference between the 80 and 70?
thank you
Hi Valentina,
Thanks for contacting us. Starting with the easy question, the key difference between the Panasonic ER-GB80-S and Panasonic ER-GB70 is that the ER-GB80-S comes with an additional 1.5mm body comb/trimmer attachment (both the GB80 and GB70 come with 2 beard combs of lengths 1-10mm and 11-20mm).
In terms of which model to go for between the Wahl 9818 and the Panasonic ER-GB80/GB70, G+S prefer the Wahl 9818 for its extended warranty, superior battery (Lithium-ion battery vs Ni-MH battery), additional blades/nose trimmer options. However, if you think your boyfriend would like the convenience of not switching blades too much, then you could consider the Philips Norelco Beard & Hair Trimmer Series 5100 – BT5210, which has an incredible cutting range, great quality battery, and a 5-year warranty.
Having said all that, one of our team members has used the Panasonic ER-GB80-S for 12 months now and loves its solid feel, long cutting blade, ease of cleaning, cutting power and performance.
So at the end of the day, we feel your boyfriend would be happy with any 3 of these choices.
Hope we have not confused you, and this answer has helped a little bit. Good Luck!
Kind Regard,
Pierce
Hello, i am currently looking for a beard trimmer for my boyfriend for Christmas. He wants a nice one and good quality as well as good for his beard. He has a short beard with a mustache and likes to trim it. I was going for the first top choice you suggested. I’ve never bought a beard trimmer in my life so i want to make sure im actually buying something that’s worth it and he would really like. could use some help please. 🙂
Hi Leslie,
I think your boyfriend would be really happy with the Wahl 9818 Lithium Ion Plus. He will be able to trim his beard short, and the Wahl is maneuverable enough so he can work on his mustache. Quality is top notch and the Wahl is covered by a 5-year warranty which should provide some piece of mind.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi. I am looking to buy my son a beard trimmer for Xmas. He has a very thick, but not very long beard / stubble. He has not had much success with the cheaper models he has bought. What are your thoughts on the Wahl 9818 1117 please ? Thanks
Hi Val,
Thanks for the question. The Wahl 9818 or the Philips Norelco BT5210 would be a great choice for your son. The 5-year warranties should give you some peace of mind, and they will both handle thick stubble, without tugging or pulling hairs (and they trim with or with the guard combs). Think about how your son will be using the trimmer…if he wants a more complete grooming set (i.e. will find the nose trimmer and detail shaver useful) go for the Wahl…if he will just be trimming beard/head/body hair (and would like a bit more convenience) then the Philips would be a great choice.
Let us know if you have any follow up questions.
Cheers Pierce
Hey what do you guys think of the braun bt5050? compared with the norleco 5000 or 7200/
Hi J,
Thanks for the question.
So comparing the Braun BT5050 vs. the Philips Norelco Series 5100 – BT5210
The Braun BT5050 (link to the product on Amazon http://geni.us/braunbt5050) is very similar to the Philips BT5210 in a lot of ways. They are both washable under a tap, have high-quality blades, can be used cordlessly and corded, and are made by great companies.
The minor differences are: the Braun BT5050 has a larger cutting range (25 lengths from 1mm to 20mm with 0.5mm increments), while the Philips BT5210 can trim stubble a bit closer (0.4mm) and only trims to 13mm, but the increments are much smaller at 0.2mm (which we really like).
The main reasons we like the Philips BT5210 better than the Braun BT5050 are the 5-year warranty provided by Philips (you do need to register the product), along with a 45-day money back guarantee if you are not fully satisfied. Also, we tend to prefer products which use Lithium Ion batteries like the Philips BT5210 – the Braun has a Ni-MH (Nickel-Metal Hydride), which typically have less power, take longer to charge and do not last as long. You can read more about the battery differences in our article which we link to in the article above, called “Rechargeable Battery Care, and Cordless Appliance Battery User Guide”.
And as for the Philips 7200 – this just really depends if you like the idea of the Vaccum function… 🙂
Hope this helps – let us know if you have any follow up questions.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi,
I am looking for the best whole trimmer set in a moderate price range, eg: Philips MG3750/60 Trimmer, Philips PH-QG3332/23 Trimmer etc. Not sure what other whole sets are available in other companies. Can you please recommend for a good whole trimmer set for me.
Tarun
Hey Tarun,

Hello,
Is the Philips Beard Trimmer Cordless and Corded for Men QT4011/15 any good, as I read it comes with Titanium blades
Regards,
Raj
Hi Raj,
Thanks for your question. The Philips Beard Trimmer Cordless and Corded for Men QT4011/15 is effectively the same trimmer as the Philips Norelco BT7215/49 we reviewed above, but without the vacuum system. The titanium coated blades will cut your beard efficiently, be corrosion resistant and will be very durable.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hello,
I am on the verge of buying a trimmer for personal use, would like to know the difference between Philips Vacuum Beard Trimmer BT7206/15 and Philips Norelco BT7215/49, they both seem to be the vacuum type and similar looking, but the price is twice as double, Please advice.
Regards,
Raj
Hi Raj,
Thanks for the question. It looks like Philips have created a model specifically for the Indian market with the BT7215/49. The key difference between the Philips Vacuum Beard Trimmer BT7206/15 and Philips Norelco BT7215/49 is that the BT7206/15 comes with the Precision trimmer & 2 combs to help trim the harder to reach areas (upper lip etc.).
The Philips Norelco BT7215/49 is dual voltage (compatible with all worldwide voltages), but it seems like the seller on amazon.in is shipping from the US, so you might want to check with the seller if you will need a plug adapter for that model. Or it might just be more cost effective and easier to buy the BT7206/15 model.
Good luck.
Cheers Pierce
Hi I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article. I just have a few questions. I have sensitive acne prone skin and have struggled with 5 blade razors, I have recently switched to a top of the line electric shaver and and hoping for better results.
Another option I am looking at is buying a beard trimmer as I have heard this is a good alternative for acne prone skin. I just need to find one that gives me the absolute least mount of stubble (preferable > 1m) and that also won’t irritate my skin. Do you have any recommnedations?
Thanks
Hi Tone,
Yes, a beard trimmer can be a great option for those with acne/sensitive skin. If trimming closeness is your key criteria then the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer would be a great option – it is a professional quality trimmer that can be zero-gapped (blades can be manually adjusted) to cut even closer.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Can you please help me in deciding which beard trimmer to buy?
I want a beard trimmer available in India which allows both wet and dry trimming, both corded and cordless use, easy to wash under a faucet, compatible with Indian voltage, has additional blades (or if used without comb, then it should be able to) to outline or detail the contours/borders of beard or goatee without requiring the use of razor for this outlining purpose. My budget is maximum Rs. 7,000, plz suggest me the best beard trimmer with above features.
Hi Prabal,
Thanks for getting in touch.
How about the Philips Norelco Beard & Head trimmer 5100? You can use it corded or cordless, it is waterproof, Automatic voltage 100-240V, cuts to 0.4mm with the beard guard (much closer without the guard), and it looks like it is available for about Rs 7,034 from amazon India.
You can read more about the Philips Norelco Beard & Head trimmer 5100 on Amazon via the link below.

Hi,
I am looking for Zero cut trimmer (clean shave) as I can’t use razors; also with a nose ,ear and body trimming attachments like in MULTI GROOM KITS. Is there anything you can suggest?
Hi Vinay,
Finding a trimmer that can be zero gapped and that can also be used as a multi groomer might be a challenge (if you do find one let us know). The Wahl 9818 should meet most of your requirements – it will trim very close (about 0.5mm), has the nose and ear trimmer, and comes with multiple attachments.

Hello.
I want to buy a trimmer for my beard. I dont use it to cut my hair (head).
I wanted to buy the “Moser Li+Pro Professional Cord/Cordless Hair Clipper, Titanium [1884-0051]”
but this is a hair trimmer. right ?
I am confused. will this be ok for my beard ? whats the difference between a hair trimmer and a beard trimmer ?
Thanks.
Hi Fay,
Thanks for the question. We have not tested the Moser Li+Pro but it looks like it will work well as a general hair cutting device i.e. it will cut both head hair and beard hair. Their are devices (with specialised features) that focus on trimming head hair (for example the Philips Norelco QC5580/40 Do-It-Yourself Hair Clipper Pro which has a rotating head to help shave the back of the head, and comes with a foil attachment to shave closer) or trimming beards (Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 with the laser and the Philips Norelco BT7215/49 with the vacuum) – but some are more generalised devices and can do both.

I’m looking for a quiet pair of beard trimmers.
Something affordable and compact.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Hey Charlie,
The combination of quiet, affordable and compact is a tricky one when it comes to beard trimmers. We can suggest models that tick some of the boxes, but you will have to decide which features are most important – and maybe opt for a quieter more expensive model over a more compact model etc.
You mention quietness first… Andis make some brilliant, high quality, quiet trimmers, but you will pay a bit more and we are not sure if 5.5 inches in length is considered compact enough for you. There are 2 main Andis models that run very cool and quiet, that you might want to consider.
1) The Andis T-Outliner, which is at #5 on our list – corded only.
You can find out more about this on Amazon via this link -> http://geni.us/beardtrimmer5
2) The Andis SlimLine Ion T-Blade Trimmer – corded and corded use.
You can find out more about this on Amazon via this link -> http://geni.us/andisslimlinetrimmer
At the other extreme you have a very compact, professional unit called the Wahl Professional Peanut, that comes in either corded or cordless. The unit will not be as quiet as the Andis options, but ticks your affordable and compact requirements.

That is super helpful! Thank you once again and congratulations on the excellent website!
Dear Pierce,
Thank you for your inputs.
Can I request your thoughts on a couple of follow-up questions?
1. I may have overshot when I said I would like to grow my beard upto 20mm. In case I need to grow my beard to only upto 15mm, which of the trimmers mentioned in the above article or comments would be the best?
Here are a couple of examples of the kind of beard length I am targetting:
https://smhttp-ssl-33667.nexcesscdn.net/manual/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/mens-rectangle-face-beard-3.jpg
https://smhttp-ssl-33667.nexcesscdn.net/manual/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/mens-rectangle-face-beard-2.jpg
Some considerations: Good beard trimming is the primary objective, contouring is secondary; Corded option would be nice to have but not a must.
2. Could it be that the reason some of my beard hair stick out is not because of the length of the hair but because I don’t use any products on my face (no beard wax or cream)?
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
Kunal
Hi Kunal,
Thanks for the extra information.
Yes, I still think the Remington MB4045B is the way to go. The medium comb will allow you to trim you beard from 1.5mm to 18mm (then you also have the stubble comb or XL comb if you need shorter or longer lengths). You can use the Remington MB4045B without the combs to help with detailing/contouring if you need (to 0.7mm). It is not a corded option but it has a high quality lithium ion battery which should serve you well.
I certainly think that using beard wax would be valuable in taming/styling/conditioning your beard hairs.
Cheers for now,
Pierce
Dear G+S,
Thank you for the extrememly helpful article. May I request your help with my specific problem?
When I trim my beard using my current trimmer, (Andis T-outliner) I end up with beard hair which kind of ‘stand’ on the skin surface. I think this is because they are not long enough to ‘fall down’, and they are not short enough to make the ‘standing’ of the hair not apparent.
The biggest attachment comb of the Andis T-Outliner is 3/8 inches (9.5mm). Attachment combs bigger than this are not available (they only have four comb lengths: 1/16″, 1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″).
Therefore, I am looking to buy a new trimmer which can help me grow my beard a bit longer – to get over the hair standing issue – yet keep it well groomed. I will have to experiment with the beard length, but would like to have the optionality to grow it close to 20mm, if necessary.
Effectively, the twin goals I am trying to acheive are: (1) Grow my beard a bit longer, (2) Keep the beard well groomed and even in length.
Which trimmer would you recommend I buy?
Also, is their a beard cream/moisturiser that you recommend?
Thank you in advance.
Kind regards,
KS
Hi Kunal,
Thanks for getting in touch.
I would suggest you look at the Remington MB4045B. It comes with three combs – stubble comb (which can trim from 1mm to 5mm in 0.5mm increments), a medium comb (1.5mm to 18mm) and an XL comb (20mm to 35mm). With this range of options you should find a length that you can work with.
In terms of beard wax, please check out our review linked below. The beard wax will not only help with moisturising and shaping, but will probably help a bit with your beard hair standing on the skin surface.

Hope this helps – please let us know if you have any further questions.

OK, so which is the trimmer for me if I simply want the closest trim?
Hi Richie,
Thanks for your comment.
Are you interested in maintaining a stubble look, or are you looking for a outliner that can create nice lines for your beard etc?
You have a few main options.
The Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41) will trim as close as 0.4mm.
The Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer can trim as close as about 0.1mm without the guard -> it can also be zero gapped, which means you can adjust the blades (this takes a screw driver and a bit of fiddling – feel free to google it) to create an even closer trim (this is typically done by barbers to create really nice lines, but it also increases the chance of catching/cutting skin, so be careful if you think about doing this).
Hope this information helps a bit.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Pierce – Thanks for the excellent response and spot-on analysis. You nailed the summary in the last paragraph (great phrasing btw) that really helped clarify the decision for me! – KB
Pierce – Thanks much for your quick reply and the great info. I’ll look at the Norelco 5100.
I also apologize for not being more clear, but I have a dedicated clippers for cutting my hair (Wahl Magic Clip).
After many years, I’ve grown the beard back, so I was looking for a second machine to handle two other things: (1) beard trimming/grooming and detail edging (things like the jaw line, under the nose & around the lips), and, since the clippers blade is wider, (2) also use this new machine w/ a smaller blade width to do more precise detail work on hair cuts (back of neck edge line, cleanup below the neck line, & cleanup behind the ear lobes).
With these clarifications, would the Remington and/or the Wahl MAG be back in play along w/ the Norelco you suggested?
No corded mode on the Remington isn’t a deal breaker (just a nice backup if the battery fails), and I am curious if you think that the titanium coated blade on the MB4045A version is worthwhile? Regarding the Wahl MAG, do you now see the no zero gap as a real problem for cleaning up the back of my neck during hair cuts (I currently get by w/ the bigger clippers)?
I really appreciate your extra effort on this and am looking forward what you think my best option is after you’ve seen the clarifications.
Thanks again for all of your help!
KB
Hi KB,
Based on the clarifications.
You might want something a bit more specialised than the Norelco – as you don’t need the hair clipper options etc. Although, it does have the easy 18 adjustments (1mm-18mm) and the precision trimmer for fine lines and contouring, and a foil shaver to get a closer finish. You can trim down and then get the foil shaver to finish of to a smooth finish (although it is tricky to get a straight line with a foil shaver).
For the Remington MB4045 I would say the titanium coated blade is definitely worth the extra $10 investment. So going for the MB4045A with the titanium coated blade (I will update the article to reflect this fact) will add to the durability (harder wearing & extra strength) and therefore a sharper cut for longer. The Remington MB4045B will cut to about .7mm without the guard.
Based on your updated requirements I would probably lean towards the Wahl Professional Sterling Mag. Looking again at the blade attachment (model blade 2111) it looks like to you can cut to 0.4mm (sorry about the confusion), which should be enough to create some very sharp lines.
http://geni.us/wahlsterlingmag
I guess it will come down to the compromise of switching between 2 guard combs on the Wahl, vs the flexibility of the length dial on the Remington. And then the length of the outline you want to be able to achieve without the combs attached. So I think you want more of a beard outliner trimmer (Wahl Mag) that can be used as a beard trimmer, than a beard trimmer (Remington MB4045) that can be used as an outliner.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi G+S,
Thanks much for your thorough reviews! After researching, I’m torn between the Wahl Sterling MAG trimmer (not listed in your review) and the Remington MB4045B, and I’d like to get your thoughts on which of these would be better for my situation (or if something else is the right fit).
I have a multi-purpose use in mind for the trimmer. One is that I keep my hair quite tight since mother nature has taken its course (#1 up the sides & back and blending into #2 on top) and want a tool that can handle the detail around the edges (back of neck & sides by the ears) more cleanly/precisely than clippers as well as the occasional quick, in between cleanup. The other is that I’m looking for a strong beard trimmer/edge detailer for a shorter beard (typically in the 3mm to 6mm range & maybe the occasional stubble look).
The main issue is that my hair and beard texture are quite coarse and there is no real “grain” to it (both hair & beard don’t lay in consistent directions at all), so I’m looking for something that can handle cutting this type of hair … and do it evenly. This has driven me to pro type clippers as the few home types that I’ve tried just don’t cut it (pardon the pun!) … I’ve never owned a detail trimmer before.
Other reviews of the MAG have been really good as far as cutting tough hair, so I’m curious if you think the 4 combs give it enough adjustability for my beard. The adjustability of either MB40455 (A or B) w/o a lot of change out pieces sounds really good as well, so I’m curious if the blades & motor can handle my coarse/tough hair type.
Also, if Remington is the choice, would the titanium coated blades of the Copper version (MB4055A) provide an even better cut than the MB4045B? Cost aside, I assume everything else is about the same as the “B” version (i.e. – the same 19 adjustments on the zoom wheel & fewer attachments, but I don’t see these details called out clearly on the Remington web site)?
My preference is a cordless/corded option (Ion battery). Can the Remington models be operated either cordless or corded (or do they only function as a cordless)?
I’d really appreciate your insights, thoughts and guidance!
Thanks!
KB
Hi KB,
Thanks for the great question – this was a fun/challenging one. To summarise your key requirements what I focused on was:
1) Powerful trimmer / multigroom device that can be used corded or in cordless mode
2) Multiple length settings in one/as few comb guards as possible
3) Skin friendly detailed trimmer option for finishing work
Unfortunately, the Remington MB4045 is more focused as a face/beard trimmer, so it might not be exactly what you are looking for, if you want to use it as a hair clipper as well. In addition it cannot be used in corded mode.
The Wahl Professional Sterling Mag is a great high quality trimmer that will certainly have enough power to meet your needs (in both corded and cordless mode). However, it only comes with 4 multiple interchangeable guards, so you are limited in the lengths you can achieve and there will be a lot of guard comb changes required to meet your needs. The guard length are:
S-1 – 1/8 Inch, 3.18mm
S-2 – 1/4 Inch, 6.3mm
S-3 – 3/8 Inch, 9.5mm
S-4 – 1/2 Inch, 12.7 mm
On the plus side the Wahl Sterling Mag is incredibly quite, the battery life is outstanding, it runs very cool, and is easy on the skin.
The other noticeable downside is that you cannot zero gap these trimmers, so they will not trim to about 0.4mm.
Click the link below to find out more about the Wahl Professional Sterling Mag Trimmer on Amazon
http://geni.us/wahlsterlingmag
There is another class of trimmer that you might want to consider called Multigroomers. One of the great versions is the Norelco Multigroom 5100 model number QG3364. This trimmer offers corded and cordless use, a high performing lithium ion battery and turbo boost for thick hair. It comes with a nose trimmer, simple foil shaver, detailed trimmer (to define sharp lines) and 18 adjustable lengths from 1mm to 18mm (3 guards are included, hair clipping comb, beard comb and stubble comb). It also has self sharpening blades made from finely ground chromium steel for long-lasting performance and rounded blade tips so they are friendly on the skin. It is probably not as “professional” a model as the Wahl Mag, but it probably more closely meets your requirements for a cheaper price.
You can read more on Amazon via the link below.

Let us know how you go with your decision.

Hi and thank you for the quick response!
You recommend tge Norecelo 9100 for 12mm length, but says in the description that it only goes up to 7mm.
I went over the specs on their website and I can’t find 12mm suppory anywhere..
Also, it says that the Remington trimmer us washable – does it not mean it is fully waterproof?
Thank you in advance.
Hi L,
Very sorry for the confusion, I got a bit excited about trying to give you some additional options, and while looking into another Philips model (see below) did not write down my thoughts clearly -> the Philips Norelco 9100 does only trim to 7mm (corrected now as well in the comment above to avoid confusing anyone else).
In fact I spoke to our beard trimmer contacts and they suggested you look into the Philips Norelco Beard & Head trimmer 5100 – as it should fit all of your requirements. It is 100% waterproof and washable, can be used corded & cordless (Advanced lithium-ion battery enables 70 minutes use after 1 hour of charging), can trim from 0.4mm to 13mm with the guards (and without the guard for zero-gap stubble trimming), and has an approximate 1 pound weight. What you do not get with the Philips 5100 beard and head trimmer, that you get with the Remington MB4040/MB4045B model, is the multiple attachable cutting heads (beard, goatee and stubble) – but you might not need all these options.
You can read more about the Philips Norelco Beard & Head trimmer 5100 on Amazon via the link below.
http://geni.us/beardtrimmer5100
We have made it clearer in the article above that with the Remington MB4040/MB4045B you need to remove the cutting blades first before washing them (and then dry them fully to prevent rusting). The unit itself is not water resistant like the Norelco 9100.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi,
I read your reviews and still can’t decide which one to pick.
I will be traveling for the next few months, so these are the things I’m looking for in a trimmer:
– washable / water resistant
– 12 mm length support
– 0 length support – maybe using it without a comb?
– doesn’t take long to charge
– doesn’t take much space and not too heavy
I was considering number 4 on the list – tge Remington trimmer, but there are two problems:
– The review says that I may cut myself with the blades. Does that mean that I can’t use it for a 0 length trim for my neck? (Without the comb)
– It is heavy. 1.5 punds is a lot to carry around on my back everywhere.. Although it says that the newer model is the heavy one, Is the older model less heavy?
What would you recommend me to buy?
Thanks in advance!
Hi L,
I think you could safely choose either the Philips Norelco 9100 or the Remington MB4045B trimmers and they would both serve you well. The Remington MB4040/MB4045B will trim to 12mm and the Philips Norelco 9100 will trim to 7mm, and the weights and product dimensions are roughly equal (MB4045B weight corrected to 1.15 pounds, with the MB4040 being around the same weight). You will have to be more cautious with the MB4045B around water than with the Philips Norelco 9100.
Effectively, with any trimmer where you do not use the beard guard you need to be careful to not nick yourself – this is where you are trimming “larger” areas to get the stubble look, rather than just cleaning up the edges/lines of your beard/styling. Although, the tips on the Philips Norelco are probably slightly more forgiving than the Remingtons. If you are going to use the trimmers without the guards to create the stubble look, then trim to the lowest setting possible with the guard on (.4mm for the Philips Norelco and 1mm for the Remington), then stretch the skin to ensure it does not get caught (use the other hand and lengthen your neck etc.), and finally ensure you do not apply much pressure (let the trimmer do the work).
Hope this helps a bit, good luck with the choice – and enjoy the travels.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi Pierce
Yes I was looking at beard trimmers
Thanks I’ll have another look
Andrea
I’m hoping to buy a shaver for my friend living in Jordan, the voltage is 220 (whatever that means?)
My hairdresser says Wahl are really good. Is that suitable for taking to Jordan?
Hi Andrea,
Are you wanting to buy a electrical shaver or a bear trimmer/stubble trimmer? We have updated the beard trimmer article above with details of the charger voltage.
If you are actually after an electric shaver then check out our page below – which also lists the electric shaver voltage information.

hi I have read ur website. i want to know which best beard trimmer including all in one trimmers such as nose, ear, etc have both nick-metal hydride AND carbon steel coated in titanium.
Hi Arlan,
Thanks for the question.
Hopefully, the product we are going to suggest meets most of your requirements. It is the Remington PG525 Head to Toe Lithium Powered Body Groomer Kit. You can read more about it in our article linked below
http://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/5-best-body-groomers-for-men/
or you can read more about it on amazon via this link
http://geni.us/bodygroomer3
The Remington PG525 can trim facial hair, nose ear & eye brow hair, and body hair. It has surgical stainless steel blades of very high quality (although they are not coated in titanium).
The Remington PG525 comes with a lithium-ion battery. As mentioned in the article above the lithium-ion batteries have a slightly edge on nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries – as they hold their charge for a longer period of time (an average of 50-60 minutes of run-time from a lithium-ion trimmer compared to about 30 minutes with a NiMH model).
Kind Regards,
Pierce
What is your opinion of the bevel trimmer? It seems expensive but has won awards and such. My husband has a long rough beard and likes to maintain that but also likes to change and do a stubble and maintain that. I don’t want a ton of attachments and want the battery to last a long time. It’s so hard trying to pick a beard trimmer while being a female! 🙂
Hi Tara,
The Bevel trimmer (amazon link here http://geni.us/beardtrimmerbevel ) does look like a very high quality product – and it has some great design features. However, from talking to our Barber contacts the performance is on par with the Andis T-Outliner – and for the approximately $200 price we would have expected slightly more. There are some key differences between the Bevel Trimmer and the Andix T-Outliner; and if you think those features add enough value to your trimming experience that you can ignore the price differential, then go for it.
Bevel Trimmer
– simple, no screw driver, zero-gap adjustment.
– Cordless use for 5 hours, high quality battery
– beautiful design and look
– No beard guides, so you are stuck with a product that can only be used to outline the edge of hair growth, or short stubble (#00000 blade length = 0.2 mm = 10 hours of hair growth). I think they are going to be selling beard guides soon.
If you want to know more about the Bevel Trimmer, then follow this link to amazon.
http://geni.us/beardtrimmerbevel
Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer
– high quality, proven, durable trimmer.
– not cordless
– just a great, reliable trimmer
– 4 beard combs

Pierce
Hi,
I am looking for Zero cut trimmer (Almost of clean shave). Among the above which one would you suggest?
Hi CP,
All the trimmers on this list can be used as stubble trimmers if they are operated without the guards.
If you are just after a simple battery operated stubble trimmer, with self-sharpening blades, which requires little maintenance, can cut really short and is very reasonably price you could consider the Remington MB4040 or MB4045 models.
Amazon link -> http://geni.us/beardtrimmer4
If you don’t need the trimmer to be battery operated we would highly suggest the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer.
Amazon link -> http://geni.us/beardtrimmer5

Pierce
HI
Can u please advise me a trimmer that trims a week old thick hair to near clean shave & also trims arm pits & pubic hair
Have used low price trimmers but very disappointed
Hi Amar,
For a reasonably priced reliable trimmer you might want to consider something like the Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600. If you use the T-Blade without the guide combs you can get a very short trim (near clean shave) – and the trimmer can be used anywhere on the body. It also has a nice variety of shaving attachments such as the dual foil shaver head in case you want to get a closer shave. Good luck with the choice.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hello.
Just to note that on Andis website the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer is discontinued. I am looking for something like that that will give me a good trim because I do want a great quality one. I do like my bread to be fairly short, so I need something that can trim to about 3in, However, I also like that Idea of laser guided trimmers as well. Is there a middle ground for a reasonable price?
Hi Chris,
Thanks for getting in touch. I just checked on the Andis website and from what I can tell the 4775 is still available – and it is also available on amazon via this link http://geni.us/beardtrimmer5
From reading your requirements we would suggest that the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41) would certainly meet your needs. It is a very high quality trimmer, that will be able to trim you beard to as short as .4mm (1/64th of an inch), and has the laser guide.
If you decide to go for the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer or one of their similar corded trimmers, and you feel you might need some help getting straight lines while trimming, then there are some great little products called “beard guide tools” which might help you. Feel free to check them out on amazon via this link http://geni.us/beardguidetool
Good luck with your choice.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
I’m new to beard trimming as I usually have it done by a professional at a barber shop. I do like my beard to be really short, almost like it was shaved off, so maybe 3in. I liked the one that you said was like a professional beard trimmer but I like the idea of having a laser. Are there ones that do both for not a lot of money but not too cheep?
I will only buy a plug-in model and I want one that will last a very long time. How about some more options?
Hi Pop,
If you want an ultra reliable trimmer which is used while plugged in, then G+S would recommend the Andis 4775 GTX T-Outliner Trimmer. As mentioned in the review above this is a barber quality trimmer, that is lightweight, has precision durable blades, and can be used comfortably by people at home (unlike other barber quality trimmers which can be a bit more temperamental i.e. harder to use by beginners).
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi. I’m interested in getting your #2 pick — the Philips Norelco BT7215/49. However in looking at the reviews and questions asked, it seems like the combs and attachments are flimsy enough that they could easily break. Was this your experience in testing this particular model, or do you have any comment regarding this concern? Thanks.
Hi Jaren,
Thanks for raising this question – as this potential Con is missing from the information in the article above. With the Philips Norelco Beard trimmer Series 7200 (Vacuum trimmer model BT7215/49) the main trimmer guard ( Norelco Comb 1: Beard & Stubble attachment), like on most trimmers, is plastic. The guard is placed “on top” of the trimmer and snaps in place via two plastic tabs or tines at the end of the guard. The main guard is then removed by depressing 2 additional tabs to empty the vacuum chamber.
The G+S team have used the Philips Norelco BT7215 Trimmer quite consistently for the last year and have not had any issues with the guard. Looking at some comments on amazon is does appear however that the tines/plastic tabs on the guards have broken for some users. How many breakages there have been or how likely it is that they will break for you is very hard to predict.
3 additional points.
1) From what we can tell, even if the tines/plastic tabs did break it would not stop you from actually using the trimmer and the trimmer guard i.e. the guard would stay in place due to the fact that you are pressing the trimmer against your face while using it.
2) If you are careful taking the guard off and on, and while placing it down (after you have removed it) this will of course reduce the chances of any breakages.
3) Although not ideal you could always order a replacement part, see link below.
https://philips.encompass.com/item/10665335/Norelco/422203631981/Comb_1:_Beard___Stubble

I’d like a Trimmer that would be able to cut my moustache hair. Because every trimmer I’ve found is quite bulky and wont reach that area. Any recommendations?
Hi Sammy,
No problem – it is quite common for some men to have trouble trimming their moustache, especially the hairs close to the nose. Before I suggest a trimmer here are a few pointers that might help you get some better results when trimming your moustache and hairs close to the nose.
1) pull your upper lip down over your jaw and at the same time pull back your lower jaw and open your mouth. This will work to lengthen your upper lip and might help you get better access to those upper lip/moustache hairs?
2) while doing number 1, the important thing to do (I am sure you are already doing it) is to hold the trimmer “upside down” and work from the bottom of the lip upwards towards the nose
3) If you need more “room” you can also take the thumb of your spare hand (or thumbs and pointer finger) and push upwards (and to the side) on your nose/nostril
In terms of the best trimmer for working on the upper lip and moustache you want to focus on trimmers with have a narrow head like the:
– Remington MB4045, http://geni.us/beardtrimmer4a
– Wahl Lithium Ion trimmer #9854 http://geni.us/beardtrimmer2, or its big brother the Wahl #9864 http://amzn.to/2n81p8M
Good luck, and happy trimming.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Awesome post! thanks for the info and will definitely be picking one from here.
Hi I shave with razor now but I prefer instead to trim nd keep little stubble.price not being the criteria which trimmer would give me the shortest stubble as close to shave without actually shaving but just trimming.i prefer longer charges to make it easier while traveling.
Hi Viren,
What do you think of the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41)? It is able to trim down to 1/64th of an inch (0.4 mm), will run cordless for 1 hour, is easy to clean and has self sharpening blades.
Cheers Pierce
I am looking for the best beard trimmer and for shaving a tight bald head. I like to use a trimmer (to get real tight), instead of a razor. Any recommendations for those 2 requirements.
Thanks,

Hi Brandon,
Please check out GroomNStyle’s Top 5 Best Electric Head Shavers page – link below. The Philips Norelco QC5580/40 Do-It-Yourself Hair Clipper Pro, might be what you are looking for. It can trim incredibly close (head and face) and then you could swap to the foil shaver to complete your head.

Hi.
I have been looking after a good trimmer for a really long time. I would like to know which one would you recommend for me as I have a kind of forest on my face and a really thick hair.
I have been using a middle class Philips timmer but it seen to be a really week as my hair is thick as !!!!.
Please help me out by recommending me a good trimmer regardless of the price.
Thanks.
Hi Gabi,
Happy new year! If you do not need to do detailed trimming the team would suggest that you consider the Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600 – as mentioned in the review this trimmer has twice the average torque of a standard trimmer which makes it perfect for men with thick hair.

I have been using a Wahl Peanut trimmer for years.
Issue is the blades get dull fast but most importantly the closest shave is still too long for my beard. I use the S-1 guard but doesn’t create stubble look.
What is the best trimmer, that can give me more of a stubble look with amazing blades? I actually prefer plug in models to battery.
Hi Keith,
How about the Remington MB4040 Lithium Ion Mustache and Beard Trimmer? It has a stubble trimmer (titanium coated, self sharpening precision ground blades), and a high quality lithium ion battery that has about 120 minute run time?
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hi team,
Any views on the Wahl 9864, and how it fares in all-round trimming and styling compared to the other trimmers in this guide? I like to keep changing my look, so having a wide range lengths helps a lot.
Hi Rakesh,
The team really liked the Wahl 9854-600. The Wahl 9864 also looks like a very high quality model, which although twice the price of the Wahl 9854, seems to have a few additional key features – such as nose trimmer, 3 bladed foil shaver, longer battery life and an additional guide comb. If it ticks the boxes for you functionally then we think it would serve you well.

Hi Pierce
Many thanks for the speedy response, I can imagine you’re being bombared with Christmas questions and requests, so well done.
You have made much decision much easier and thanks for the information on the MB4045 narrower head, that’s definitely a pertinent factor for me and a deciding factor (and I suspect many others). This particular trimmer is also on offer in some of the major UK retailers with the bristle comb and scissors so it looks like a good buy.
Have a great Christmas and a happy new year.
Kind Regards
Costa
Hi groomnstyle
Thanks for all the great reviews. You must be fed up of receiving the same questions despite the reviews. I’m looking to get a goatee trimmer to replace my current babyliss i stubble which was great but the plastic comb case which controls the length has broken which makes it useless. The other flaw I noticed was that because of the large head, I struggled to trim my moustache especially hairs under my nose. It meant I had to use the blades without the plastic guard so it was never even. So id like to try something different. Here is what I am looking for.
1) Trim my goatee to between 3mm and 3.5mm. If I can achieve something in between then brilliant but I’m not sure if any of the trimmers will achieve an accuracy of more than 0.5mm at that length. I know many can achieve 0.2mm up to 2mm.
2) I will not be using it for anything other than goatee trimming so I’m not fussed about loads of attachments and gadgets. I shave with a razor which frankly I find the best way to shape it, so long as the razor is new.
3) Must be cordless but not bothered if not water proof or washable. The brush does a good job cleaning and don’t shave my goatee in the shower.
4) id rather not spend any more than £40 sterling as I reckon I can get a decent trimmer for my needs at that price. That puts the Philips laser and norelco with a vacuum at the bottom of the list.
Top of my list right now is the remington mb4045 which you reviewed and MB320 barba that hasn’t been. I’d appreciate your thoughts and recommendations on what models to consider based on my above criteria.
Much appreciated
Costa
Hi Costa,
Thanks for the question, and sorry for the small delay in replying – there has been a mini Christmas rush.
Based on your requirements the team would recommend that you lean towards the Remington MB4045. You will be paying about £10 more but you will be closer to meeting your requirements.
The Remington MB4045 comes with a separate stubble comb which will let you trim your goatee to either 3 or 3.5mm i.e. the Remington MB4045 stubble comb allows you to trim from 1mm to 5mm in 0.5mm increments. Whereas the Remington MB320 Barba will trim to preset lengths of 1.5mm, 2.5mm, 4mm, 5.5mm, 7mm etc.
The other factor we would consider pertinent is that the stubble comb on the MB4045 has a narrower head than the MB320 which will help you trim under your nose easier etc. The Remington MB4045 will allow for cordless use.
Hope this helps a bit.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Maybe I missed it… but does the Wahl have self sharpening blades? If not, how long would they be expected to last with 3x/month use?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Jacob,
The wahl 9854-600 does contain self sharpening precision blades. Having said that after extended use the blades will eventually require sharpening – the instructions provided with the trimmer provide details of how to keep the blades oiled etc. which will extend the life of the blades. If the blades do get to a point where they require manual sharpening you can either do it yourself (there are youtube videos on how to do this) or you can buy replacement blades.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Thanks for this helpful review. I am looking for the best stubble trimmer. Which of these would you recommend for that specific type of trimming?
Hi Daniel,
Any of the top 5 trimmers listed here will be able to help you maintain your stubble. As for which one is right for you will depend on answering a few questions:
– Do you have any specific requirements?
– Do you want to do any detailing work, or do you like the idea of a laser to help create nice lines – or do you just want to maintain facial stubble?
– What length/s are you aiming for?
– Does it need to be waterproof?
– Do you have a budget in mind?

Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41) : Do they clean shave ?
Hi AJ,
No, the Philips Norelco Beard Trimmer 9100 (Model BT9285/41) can trim to 0.4mm (1/64th of an inch). There are some All in One products (example http://amzn.to/2g1WC4d) that will have attachments for trimming and then shaving (but the shaving will never be as good as a dedicated electric shaver). If you are after a dedicated shaver then check out GNS’s Top 5 list @ http://groomwithstyle.com/art-of-shaving/mens-top-5-best-electric-shaver-list/
Cheers Pierce
Thanks so much for the quick response, Pierce.
Sounds like I’m in the market for more of the same! Not a fan of all the attachments, specifically the shaver, as I have found in the past that they do not compare in quality or comfort to that of a stand alone one.
Hopefully more companies will try their hand at this double-ended style in the future, I sure recommend it!
Best regards, Jay
No problems. If a manufacturer could create an all in one where each function was best in class, as a stand-alone one, it would be amazing to see (or at least the price would most likely be amazing). Unfortunately, with most of the all in one’s there are going to be some compromises…
Hi GNS,
My Philips QS6141 has finally bit the dust and I’m wondering what’s on the market these days that’s similar. I like the dual-ended shaver & trimmer combo so I can easily do both even when I’m in a hurry.
Similar price would be preferred as well, not looking for top of the line $200+ etc.
Cheers, Jay
Hi Jay,
One suggestion might be, as you have found a product that meets your beard type and styling requirements, to stick with what you know (for the price the Norelco All in one is a great product http://amzn.to/2gn6ARU). Or maybe even buy the latest model QS6161 (not actually that different, it charges faster) – http://amzn.to/2g1WC4d
Other alternatives in the all in one range are:
The Wahl All-In-One Grooming Kit 9854-600, reviewed in this article. For half the price of the Norelco QS6140/41, you get a very high quality product that clippers, trims, details and shavers (foil). It is not water proof, so that might be a deal breaker for you. See link http://amzn.to/2fbiY5C
Your next alternative might be the Philips Norelco Multigroom Series 7100 QG3390. The trimmer is not as suitable for fine detailing, the foil shaver only has 1 foil (designed in theory for body hair)…but you get a nose hair trimmer and it is water proof. See link http://amzn.to/2f7m0od
In this article we review the Remington MB4040 (perfect specifically for trimming). If you want the option to shave (single foil shaving head) and trim (no fine detailer) you could look at the MB4900 offering. Once again it is a fine quality (waterproof) product. See link http://amzn.to/2g3DROT
BTW – if you intend to travel with your shaver and trimmer its always useful to ensure it has worldwide voltage (110/240 volts).
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Thanks for the quick reply and the great information.
What would be the next best (budget friendly) option?
Thanks again
No problem – we love trying to help!
For half the price of the Norelco you get the Wahl All-In-One 9854-600. There are “lots” of attachments (which you mentioned you might not want), but with that comes the ability to clipper, shave, do precision work and trim (eyebrows etc.). Lots of guide combs for trimmer and man-scaping.
Link -> http://amzn.to/2eX5bzE
The Wahl 9818 – at a higher price has your nose hairs requirement covered.
Good luck – let us know what you decide. And if you found the site helpful, please tell your friends, and follow us on facebook and twitter.
Kind Regards,
Pierce & The GNS Team
Great info, thanks. I have a couple requirements that are not esaly found in the reviews.
– goatee ‘sculpting’ is the most common use for a trimmer. I’m not very good so anything that makes managing a goatee easier is top of my list. Typical legnth is pretty short , sorry don’t know legnth.
– simple. No/few attachments for different lengths or the occasional stubble beard is important.
– low maintenance is a plus.
– Multi use…..eyebrows, nose /ear hair, man-scaping would be a bonus.
#1 and 2 are key, 3 and 4 optional.
Thanks for any sage wisdom and guidance.
Hiya Mr Cruz,
I spoke with the team and, the consensus is that, if you have the budget the BT9285/41 would be at the top of our list for you requirements.
The laser is specifically designed to help keep your goatee symmetrical. There are only 2 attachments (the detail comb and beard comb), and it is easily adjustable all the way from 0.4mm to 7mm. It is easy to clean, charge and maintain. It can be used on the eyebrows and to perform man-scaping (nose and ears won’t really work too well – check out this link for nose/ear alternatives http://bit.ly/2eSJ3pU).
The other tool you might find helpful for maintaining the symmetry of the goatee is something like the “GoateeSaver” – check it out on amazon http://amzn.to/2g0Ky8a.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Hello Groomnstyle team,
I want to buy a trimmer and can’t decide which one to be. Fist of all i want to say that my beard and mustage are pretty thick and like to keep my beard around 7-9mm. I was reading multiple articles around but can’t decide what to buy, for the moment looking at Phillips 7200 and 9000 series. First of all i was wondering if the price difference between the 2 products it is worthed (25%) and i like the aspirator from 7200 series.
If is possible give me an advice. In my country i can find from Phillips the next models: BT7210/15 and BT9290/32 – I don’t know if is any difference between them and the models you’ve tested, but i heard is different because of EU and country of distribution.
Thank you and best regards,
Alex
Thank you in advance,
Alex
Hi Alex,
Thanks again for your question. I will focus my answer on the Philips Norelco models you mentioned – they are great trimmers.
As you pointed out, the Philips Norelco trimmer models the GNS team reviewed were the US models. They match up with the UK models as per below:
US(BT9285/41) -> UK(BT9290/32)
US(BT7215/49) -> UK(BT7210/15)
Differences within the series usually come down to an extra set of combs, or travel pouches, or addition of a digital display etc. while the rest stays the same, motor performance etc.
If we compare the BT9290 vs. BT7210 key differences are:
BT9290 is washable, has the laser guide and digital display. Trimmer length 0.4 millimeters to 7 mm
BT7210 is not washable, does not have the laser guide, does not have the digital display, BUT does have the vacuum. Trimmer length 0.5 millimeters up to 10 mm
If you maintain your beard between 7-9mm, and you like the vacuum option (and don’t care about the laser or the washable option), then it sounds like the BT7210 is for you!
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
I have been getting the wahl ones and have always had trouble with the trimmers pulling my hair. Is there a trimmer that avoids that?
Hi Lee,
Thanks for touching base, which Wahl model/s trimmer do you find is pulling? From our experience a trimmer can pull hair (rather than cut) if some of the conditions listed below are met:
– it’s a cheap trimmer
– if it is not fully charged/powered
– if the blades are dull
– if it is not oiled properly
– if they are used in a rush
If you have been put off the Wahl trimmers, then myself and the team are huge fans of the Philips Norelco BT9285/41?
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Just FYI, saying if the Andis is “good enough for your barber, it’s probably good enough for you” in regards to the lack of trimming attachment options is fairly misleading, as most barbers use a clipper-over-comb technique and rarely use the attachments when cutting hair. (Well, the ones who know what they’re doing use that technique….I was in the hair profession for ten years as a colorist, so I know lots about this.) So a professional barber can create all sorts of lengths & looks just using the clipper itself with NO attachments; doing this to yourself in the mirror is NOT recommended, even for a professional. It’s an easy skill to learn but rather difficult to master, which is why a good barber is hard to find.
This isn’t to say the Andis isn’t extremely high-quality, because it is. It probably has the best “guts” of all the models you reviewed, and if properly cared for, will last a lifetime and then some. But, it’s not for the average guy who needs easy trimming of set lengths of hair anywhere on the face, head, or body.
Thanks for the input Johnny, much appreciated.

Great guide! I have the Wahl all-in-one and it does the job just fine. After reading your reviews I will look into the Philips Norelco, I like the look of the laser!
Hi my name is suraj yadav. I want to know something about nova nht 1047. What is the best price it has? How reliable it is? And all that. So plz tell me about this friends.
Hi Suraj,
The team has not reviewed the Nova 1047. The team can recommend one of the trimmers on our list above? Or you can read the reviews on amazon for the Nova via http://amzn.to/2aNd2yZ. Good luck.

Hey Everyone!
I want to buy my husband a beard trimmer for his birthday present, but I don’t want to spend a lot of money either. I was thinking of a Remington mb-200. Any feedback on this model? Is it worth the buy? Or can I get a better trimmer for same or lesser price? Let me know!
Thanks,
Megan
Hi Megan,
I have spoken to the Groom+Style Team, and the consensus is that you would be better off paying a bit more and buying the Remington mb4040. You will be getting a longer lasting product with the mb4040.
Kind Regards,
Pierce and the GroomNStyle Team
Hi,
Your article is very nice.It is very helpful for everybody. I want to buy a trimmer but i can’t decide which trimmer i would buy. I read your article and i chose philips norelco because it can groom effectively at anytime and anywhere. And it is easy to use, it has flexible head and travel friendly.
Hey Praveen,
These beard trimmers featured are all great, however the one that I went for was the Milano as it has really good adjustable settings and ensures I get the closest shave possible. Would love to see a more in-depth review on that particular model. Keep up the good work!
I’m confusing which trimmer better.
Could you please suggest me .
Hi Praveen,
All the trimmers on this list are exceptional, the Philips Norelco came out on the top of our Team’s list. Please read the details of each trimmer because, at the end of the day, the best trimmer for you is the one that meets your specific requirements.
Kind Regards,
Pierce
Maintaining a cute beard is definitely every man’s responsibility. Beard is a symbol of manliness and thus should be well cared for.It should be well trimmed.
Awesome list produced guys. I recommend panasonic milano all in one trimmer with adjustable settings
What is the longest length setting for the trimmers? I don’t want to trim my beard below 1 inch.
Peter,
1 inch is probably difficult to achieve with a beard trimmer although most brands claim they can but none of the trimmers have come out truimphs in our tests. In all practical sense, you would need a hair clipper with an 1 inch extension along with a grained comb.

The Philips Norelco vacuums have gotten weaker over the years. I had a maroon one for years that did great (T770 or something). It stopped taking a charge. I went out and got whatever model was just before the 4070. I immediately noticed much more mess, with cut hairs on my torso after using it. That was less than 2 years ago, and this morning it stopped working on the “turbo” setting. It shuts off after 1-2 seconds, and it’s fully charged.
None of the reviews online indicate much satisfaction with the strength of vacuums for any brand, but I think I’m going to try Remington since the Philips Norelco one was so disappointing last time.
That’s good! I like grooming my beards and to make it look classy and perfect I trim it! Along with it I groom my beards using effective beard growth products like beard oils, creams.
Thanks Wizer- we can only recommend ones that have been through rigourous testing in our labs
I was excited about your #1 Choice Philips Norelco BT9285/41 9100 Beard Trimmer , but the reviews on Amazon are awful. Is it really “one of the best beard trimmers of all time”?
Jeff,
Absolutely! It came up triumphs in all our in-house tests. In our opinion, it still is the best trimmer money can buy (well at-least for now!).
Cheers- Lisa
